I wasn’t sure exactly how Tom’s courses were going to help me, and hoped they weren’t just generic writing advice that would leave me feeling worse off than before. They weren’t. They gave me a concrete way of thinking structurally, so that I can actually see where I’m going and make sure I have all the necessary components of a good story. I think of it like putting a drawer organizer in the junk drawer. Once you put everything in its own compartment, you can actually see what you have and things don’t seem so bad after all. Tom convinced me that getting structure right up front is the most important thing you can do and makes everything else easier.

If you think you know structure because you've read a basic overview of each sequence's job, I suggest you bring your ego down and invest into Tom's Mastering Structure Course. It'll give you a deep understanding of structure, and I think a lot more confidence in your knowledge of screenwriting. You won't regret it.

I'm enjoying this couse and it's actually entertaining! Tom is enthusiastic and I love his presentation of the story elements. It gives your story a solid foundation as you try to piece it together and you can see what's missing and what won't work and why, which is vital. At the end of the course is a section on how to break down a movie which is awesome with examples.

Video transcript: Hi, my name is Jona. I'm a children's book writer from Sweden who found Tom online and I just wanted to share a testimonial to say how very helpful I found our one to one session. It was really interesting for me talking to a professional about not someone who really knows story structure. And I believe he saved me a lot of time working on my story by offering a pair of fresh eyes, fresh professional eyes. And yeah, it was just lots of fun and extremely helpful. So I very much recommend Tom's help and services. Thank you.

Video transcript: Good afternoon or whatever. I'm Madeline and I have been a student of Tom Vaughn's story andplot pro storyandplot.com classes for maybe six months. And I am incredibly impressed with his person, personality and his kindness and his attention to each and every one of his satisfied students. We are a community and we are learning structure and plot and we are learning university level classes from a professional screenwriter who's had a number of films done. And he is at every single class and every single morning we have writing sprints. And Tom is there like 90% of the time unless he has an appointment with his agent or unless he has to take his dog to the vet or unless he has to teach a class at the University of Houston where he has been a member of the faculty for many, many years. His expertise and his kindness and his efforts to help each and every one of us individually are unbelievable. Believe me, I paid a lot of money to phony teachers and I am really lucky to have found Tom and his classes and his brilliant students, some of them even as old as I. We are a community. We work with each other and we work with Tom on a daily basis to improve our writing, to learn how to structure a screenplay or a TV pilot, which will possibly get. Get some attention. So I cannot recommend his classes highly enough. I taught college level English and occasionally creative writing for 31 years and I know good teaching and I know sincere dedication to the art and the craft of teaching. And I'm impressed with Tom's ability to come up with new ideas, imagine new classes, respond to us all in terms of what we particularly need. We do 10 pages every. Every Saturday in the Saturday Mastermind. I would highly recommend storyandplot.com for the mastermind classes and I would highly recommend Story and Plot Pro.

As I navigate the world of screenwriter with less than 5 years of experience, logline and logline creation felt like a distant thought you feel you have a grasp on. I could confidently define what a logline is, but I had no idea on how to truly craft one that didn't sound like a general summarization of my screenplays. After Tom's course, I feel the same way when you finally get a cleared nose during a fever. I am not hesitant to approach loglines with Tom's breakdown. He manages to, in only a way he can, go step by step on what makes a great logline and how to spot it. You leave this course with everything in your possession to start creating loglines that make people want to read your work without the need of a 5 minute explanation. Props to Tom for giving examples and reviewing them with you, instead of telling you the answer and expecting you to get it off the bat. He runs a great course in how he adds meaning to everything he says and there's no time wasted. Each lesson is designed to keep you involved and engaged, and Tom excels on that premise. All in all, I am a better writer for having learned the art of the logline from Tom and his Perfecting the Logline course.

Video transcript: Okay, so I want to share my experience with Story and Plot Pro. My writing background is mostly in sketch comedy and writing and directing short films, but features have always been the thing that I've been most interested in. And so over the years, I have taken so many different screenwriting courses and read so many different screenwriting books, but I still reached this kind of stagnant place where I just didn't feel like I was getting any better. And. And a lot of the work that I was doing was just getting stashed in a drawer somewhere. And so one day I came across the story and plot substack, and the way that Tom was explaining things really clicked for me. So I signed up for a couple of his courses. Mastering Structure Idea to Outline. Those were great. And so I decided to take the leap and join Story and Plot Pro. And I just finished my first series of eight workshops. And I found it to be just so valuable when it comes to getting better as a writer. There were a lot of things that I thought I knew but wasn't doing quite as well as I could or things that I was doing that weren't working, and I couldn't quite figure out why. And Tom has the experience and the skill to just kind of see through that stuff and cut to the chase. And he has pushed me in a way that honestly, sometimes has felt pretty challenging, but that I've really appreciated because you don't grow if you don't leave your comfort zone. And so between his guidance and the accountability of the community itself, where I've met a number of people that I've clicked with who share similar goals and similar sensibilities, ultimately, I feel like I've made just so much progress as a writer, even just in these first few months. And so if you are feeling stuck and you want to take your writing to the next level, I would highly, highly recommend Tom and Story and Plot Pro.

Tom does a great job explaining the importance of the logline—why it shouldn't be an afterthought, but a starting point to see if your story can deliver on its promise. He also provides a workable template for creating an effective logline for any script.

I've been writing for several years and have taken a number of screenwriting classes, but I always found myself forgetting how to get started—how to fully develop an idea before diving into page one. Tom's class on Mastering Structure changed that. He provides a clear, practical roadmap for taking a spark of an idea, developing it into a fully realized story, and creating a plan before you ever begin writing. His process is thoughtful, concise, and incredibly easy to follow. The class leaves me feeling inspired, organized, and, most importantly, confident about starting my next script. - Anne Lanier (NYC)

Tom Vaughan's Idea to Outline fills a gap that many screenwriting courses ignore: the journey between having an idea and building a screenplay. The course excels at helping writers identify strong concepts, refine loglines, develop dramatic questions, and recognize when a project is ready or not ready to move forward. Vaughan's emphasis on commercial storytelling, clear audience hooks, and practical development tools makes the material immediately useful. I highly recommend taking both Mastering Structure and Idea to Outline. The two courses work hand in hand, with Idea to Outline helping writers develop strong concepts and Mastering Structure showing them how to turn those concepts into compelling screenplays. Together, they provide a powerful framework that gives writers a significant advantage in creating the best script possible. Thank you Tom for your knowledge, I can't wait to dive deep into the next course. Have a wonderful day.

Tom Vaughan's Mastering Structure is one of the clearest screenwriting structure courses I've encountered. His explanations of dramatic questions, character wants, and the 4-act/8-sequence model make screenplay construction far less intimidating. The course excels at helping writers organize ideas, create momentum, and finish scripts. Writers looking to master commercial feature-film structure will gain a powerful framework that can be applied immediately.

I am struggling with structure, so decided to get some professional help in the form of Tom Vaughn's "Mastering Structure." At the halfway point, I am very excited with what I have learned so far and cannot wait to get to the next video. Tom is a great instructor who is funny and easy to listen to. He makes a complex process suddenly look simple by breaking it up into bite-sized pieces. Now, telling my story in an interesting and engaging way seems possible and not daunting, like it was before.

Video transcript: Hey there, My name is Caleb and I took the asynchronous course Perfecting the Logline with Tom Vaughn. Perfecting the Logline was the perfect introductory course to his strategies and his methods. Even as an experienced writer, it's always good to revisit the basics from time to time, and for me, this course was just full of practical experience and useful examples both from Tom's own work and and from produced films that you can readily find on the market. Tom does a great job of breaking down not only how loglines work, but the components of every part of the logline, and more importantly, he uses loglines not only as a marketing tool, but as a development tool even before he starts the writing process. The course was succinct, it was easy to follow along, and I was able to fit it in between my busy schedule just by doing a few minutes a day or even just a lesson a week. I thoroughly enjoyed this course and I look forward to taking another course with screenwriting instructor Tom Vaughn.

Video transcript: Hello, my name is Michael Starks, and I've been taking Mastering Structure, a course by Tom Vaughn. I have to say I've really been enjoying this course. I love the way that Tom goes through the material and I really like the way that he suggests that you structure a screenplay. I think it's very useful to think instead of in three acts, in four acts, where you say the first act is what a first act typically is, the beginning. And then Act 2, which is typically the longest act, gets broken up into 2A and 2B. And then Act 3 comes after that. By diving into each of those parts of the screenplay and really focusing on what happens in each one, he even splits those in half. You have a manageable bit of a script to work with at a time. Like you can think of the entire idea, figure out what the high points are, what is the dramatic question, the inciting incident, the crisis, all of these things that are important, you know where they belong. And then when it comes time to actually writing, you can just fill out all the pieces of that, make a specific sequence work, and therefore that act work until you can get the entire screenplay written. And I've used this approach with the screenplay that I'm currently working on. I've already got an initial draft. It started out as a very short movie and now it's full length. And it's because of Tom's course that I was able to get an initial draft of a full length movie, which I had never done previously. So very excited about that, and I'll continue to revise it, update it, coming back to these ideas of structure to make sure that it works so that I actually end up with a project I'm very proud of and look forward to producing. Thank you, Tom.

Vaughn gets you thinking in terms of sequencing and not scenes, to set up a dramatic question and answer it. The timing of each sequence gives the story breath, creating visual momentum, narrative momentum, and emotional resonance, while moving the protagonist forward or backward on their transformational journey toward a satisfying goal. The vocabulary and goal-setting Tom's method teaches give you a value system for mastering structure.

Video transcript: I just finished Tom's class right this minute, and I'm feeling very good and inspired to leave a little testimonial. Before I started Tom's class, I've written some screenplays that have never quite gone where I've wanted them to go. I've worked in documentary films and I've created many documentaries. So I had, like, this understanding of structure, but I didn't have it all in one place and I didn't have it as simple as I do now after taking Tom's class, I have a simpler understanding of just how films work and what structure is needed, what needs to come before what makes a film more interesting. But I think more than any of that, what I have is a lot of inspiration. I have a sense of like, oh, this is so doable and fun again. And I'm really looking forward to getting into the nitty gritty of the ideas that I have and just mapping out and figuring it all out in this structure. And it feels less daunting now. It feels like something that I can wrap my head around. And when I go back to write an outline and work on these things, I will be referencing all of the things that come with the course in terms of PDFs and insights beyond the videos. There's also just a lot of really helpful information and I'm very grateful for it and I'm excited for the next steps and I'm excited for the next to come, and I did not feel that way until finishing the class. So thank you very much and I recommend it.

Tom does such a nice job of working specific examples into his instruction. When he refers to movies that we've seen, or adequately describes others enough that we get what they're about, his definition of a good concept becomes crystal clear. His humor is much appreciated, and the fact that he leaves you feeling like you, too, can accomplish your screenwriting goals is what gets my juices going. Big thumbs up.

Five Stars Aren’t Enough – A Must for Serious Writers! I’ve been a professional writer for 25 years, with over 40 published book projects under my belt. Every once in a while, I seek out a mentor to refresh what I know and push my craft to the next level. This time, I chose Tom Vaughn—and I couldn’t have made a better decision! While taking Mastering Structure, I worked on a brand-new idea during the course. The improvement was incredible; my project gained so much clarity and depth thanks to Tom’s practical and inspiring approach. This isn’t my first time learning from Tom—after “Concept is King” and “Perfecting the Logline,” “Mastering Structure” is the third course I’ve taken with him, and he keeps raising the bar. Tom’s ability to break down complex storytelling concepts into digestible, motivating steps is truly exceptional. His teaching style is clear, engaging, and always supportive—he makes even advanced material actionable and fun! No matter how much experience you bring, you’ll walk away with fresh insights, new skills, and so much motivation. Thank you, Tom! I can honestly say you’re my go-to mentor, and I look forward to every opportunity to learn from you. I used Tom Vaughn’s Story & Structure course to pressure-test a historically grounded feature screenplay I have been developing for the past nine months. Working through his character, structure, and logline frameworks gave me a practical way to evaluate my draft scene by scene and sequence by sequence, rather than relying on instinct alone. By applying his methodology, I completed a full Story and Structure Assessment of my film and identified where the narrative was working, where it needed refinement, and where targeted adjustments would strengthen the overall arc. The process helped me clarify my protagonist’s transformation, sharpen the midpoint and sacrifice, and confirm that the story was fulfilling its central promise. Tom communicates complex structural ideas in a grounded, accessible way, and it is clear that he genuinely enjoys passing on what he has learned over decades in the industry. His course provided concrete tools that directly improved my script and strengthened my confidence in its architecture. I approached the program with some skepticism, having previously taken an online beginner screenwriting course through a community college. While there was some overlap, Vaughn’s framework allowed me to rigorously test my script against professional structural standards—an invaluable process when working without regular peer feedback. I recommend this course highly to writers seeking disciplined, practical guidance through the development process.

★★★★★ The Perfect Follow-Up – If You Want Your Story to Shine, Start Here! After taking Tom Vaughn’s Concept is King course—which reignited my passion and gave my story a brand-new spark—I dove straight into Perfecting the Logline. I honestly couldn’t have asked for a better next step. This course is the ideal complement: if “Concept is King” lays the foundation, “Perfecting The Logline” is the jewel in the crown. I’ve always struggled with loglines (okay, and maybe avoided them like the plague). Facing the hard work of distilling my big ideas into one killer sentence felt overwhelming. But Tom’s clear, practical, and surprisingly entertaining guidance actually made the process… dare I say… fun? Now, my outline is sharper than ever, my story truly pops—and most importantly, my excitement for the whole project is through the roof again. I feel ready to pitch, write, and share with confidence. If you want your story to leap off the page and grip your audience from the logline onward, this is the course to take. Do yourself a favor and don’t just watch—apply every lesson! Tom, you somehow pack so much insight and inspiration into every minute. Thank you for turning a dreaded task into one of my favorite creative breakthroughs. ★★★★★ A Must-See for Every Storyteller – Concept Clarity That Rekindles Your Creative Fire! I stumbled into Tom’s Concept is King course at exactly the right moment—after cranking out over 80 pages of my new project, only to wake up one morning realizing my own excitement was fading. I binged all nine videos in just two days, and wow, did it change everything. Tom’s insights, delivered with humor and so much wisdom, helped me completely overhaul my concept. Suddenly, I was fired up again—not just about my script, but about my characters and the possibilities ahead. Tom packs so much into each lesson, you’ll find yourself nodding, laughing, and scribbling notes you’ll actually want to use. Don’t wait until you’ve hit a wall or written 80 pages like I did—take this course now, before you dive into your next project! Tom, thank you for tackling this crucial subject so brilliantly (and, by the way, I actually thought the Lens Flayer wasn’t bad at all 😉). Highly recommended. Chapeau, Tom! (Karen Christine, Germany)

I'm at the halfway point in the "Idea To Outline" course, and I love it! From The Pre-Outline right through "Genre As Structure," those lessons removed some cobwebs I had concerning structure. Tom's approach makes the concepts clear and interesting. Two thumbs up, Tom. Cheers, Chuck

I recently completed my third novel and am now immersing myself in learning about screenwriting. As a writer, one of my most bedeviling worries has always been about structure. Do I understand the code well enough? Are the blueprints or outlines of my novel crafted with the expert knowledge of structure that they should be? My second novel won a fiction award which was gratifying but my wonder about nailing structure stayed with me. No longer! I've just completed Tom's course on Mastering Structure and I can honestly proclaim he taught me the mechanics and intricacies of realizing structure for my future creative endeavors. Novels and screenplays are different but the underlying structure share many similarities. Tom's course has given me the knowledge and confidence to begin a new screenplay or novel secure in the fact that I know and understand the underlying structure of my project. His course is a gift to any writer who wants to learn about or become more proficient at crafting their story's structure.

Tom is a master. I gained so much from Concept is King and I cannot wait to get back to my screenplay and look at my scenes, tone, and ask the question: If this is true, what else is true? And, how many great scenes do I have: 3, 5, 8, or more? I highly recommend this course to anyone who is serious about writing a great screenplay. Tom will help you create just that.

Idea to Outline. Eye-opening. Well taught, just like Tom's previous courses. Mastering Structure course taught me a lot, but Idea to Outline took it to another level. Before the course I would have ideas, scenes, and some knowledge of what I wanted to do, but could still get easily stuck or stagnant. After Idea to Outline, I knew to make strong intentional choices early, how to gather great scenes, had answers to questions about my characters and story, and could figure out what structure to best tell my story. Put together with what came from prior courses, and bam! Light bulb. Do the things early to make an already difficult job much easier. Thanks, Tom!

Before the Mastering Structure course, I barely knew anything on story structure, and I was unsure why the structure in a story was super important. But after the Mastering Structure course, I not only understood why the structure in a story is extremely important, but to also build the foundation for an effective and captivating story. Each lesson was easy to understand and digest, and I had a blast going through each module.

It’s been a while since I read a book about story structure, and I’ve struggled to incorporate those principles into my writing. Somehow, I came across Tom Vaughan on Substack, a screenwriting teacher, and really enjoyed his articles. I decided to purchase his online classes, Mastering Structure and Idea to Outline. Even though I may never write a screenplay, those courses have been so helpful in giving me a roadmap for dramatic writing, which I really needed. Now I have a better way to evaluate what I’ve created and I can tell my project is already much better.

I have been through two Summer Workshops, a semester course on Writing for Screen at the University of Iowa, and attended a Robert McKee 3-day session in Los Angeles. All excellent programs. I have taken a handful of other online courses where it was difficult to connect with the content or instructor. But with Tom, it has definitely been the right person and right system for the shot in the arm I needed. His teaching method of shorter segments helped refresh and retain specific ideas for my project, offering relevant resources that left no excuses to expand with practical exercises, and then the continuous encouragement with doses of reality makes Tom Vaughan a genuine and true mentor along the way. Next level for sure and taking the next class for all the reasons above. Thank you, Tom.

Video transcript: Hey, everybody. I'm Jana Vandelaar and I just finished perfecting the logline with Tom Vaughn. And I mean, again, every one of his courses are great, but I honestly think this is one of the most important courses that you could ever take in your career if you're going for this biz. I've written four scripts right now so far, and I'm working on my fifth. Um, my last one that I wrote was a pilot, and I accidentally fill into all these points that Tom mentioned in this. In this class. I hadn't taken the class. I. The other three are just sitting there. I can see people looking at my log lines on some of the. The sites that you can post stuff that you can see that they're looking at it, but they're not picking them up. And they're great stories. So I'm kind of catching on to all of it. But this fourth one that I wrote, I think I just accidentally fell into these points. But now as I was going through the course, I'm like, yes, I get it now. That's why this one is being looked at. At any rate, I just highly, highly recommend it. It finally put it in the terms. I've taken courses before on how to do log lines, but it's like these very generic. When then until I. I'm like, what does that mean? I don't even get what it means. I don't know. And so this is very clear. And it just hit all the points. Everything was so well done. And I highly recommend it again, a hundred percent the best logline course I've ever taken. All of your courses are great, Tom. Thank you beyond words for being you and for doing this. So take this course, though. This will get you past to have them even look at your script, which is the important thing. You can write this incredible thing, but the log line can just have it be on the shelf forever. So, um, again, or take do the log line before you even write it. I love that recommendation. Somewhere in this. This course. So, anyway, really great job. Thanks, Tom. Take the course, you guys.

Tom's course is super academic yet approachable. Each module is dense with information but broken down into bite-size pieces that are easy to digest. I loved this course and recommend it for any writer who wants to learn the must-haves versus the nice-to-haves of storytelling. I've been getting Tom's weekly emails for a while now, and they never fail to inspire and deliver insight. I find myself returning to them often. I decided to take Tom's "The Story and Plot Logline/Concept Bundle." I used to save writing loglines for last, after the entire story was written, and always struggled. These courses teach how putting the story concept and logline first makes everything far more cohesive and intentional. I immediately dove into my pile of story ideas and started writing loglines. I now see how many of these ideas can actually become good stories and how many might not be worth my time. That is more than worth the price of these courses.

Sometimes it's not what you learn, it's how you learn it. There was something about Tom's concise, clear delivery and helpful supporting materials which unlocked a rush of ideas for me. Though there's a little overlap between the High Concept and Logline Mini-Course, I recommend the bundle for anyone who has felt vague about the real benefits of beginning with concept and working through loglines. I believe anyone who takes Tom's courses will generate better ideas, be better at selling them, and spare themselves hours of writing in the wrong direction.

Everything worth doing has its own language of the realm, its own culture, code, system, and wisdom, and that goes double for screenwriting. Tom's Master Class is different from everything else I experienced, and I tried it all -- personal coaching, reading stacks of books, trial and error. Within a few minutes of taking Tom's course, I knew I was finally going to learn what I was supposed to be doing with all the acts, scenes, and lines. I found myself immersed in the realm, able to speak the language, understand the culture, use the right currency. In the middle of the course, I got an idea for a fresh and fun romantic comedy (don't write those, ever). I highly recommend taking all the courses Tom is offering, and I'm really excited that there is more to come.

I took the 'Concept is King' and 'Perfecting the Logline' courses. Before I took them my loglines were a bit hit and miss and I'd never consciously thought about them being a marketing tool, or reflecting my concept. They were just this inconvenient thing I had to write to explain my story as succinctly as possible. Now I think I've got a much better handle on how to make them sell the story. I also was impressed by the way Tom explained concept and how I could use it to generate scenes. There's a particular phrase I've copied into my notebook, highlighted in neon orange so I don't forget it. When you know, you'll know...

Concept Is King is the first course I've taken with Tom and I'm pleased I did. It's a great mini course that gives you a clear definition of what concept is and how to use it to your advantage. The movie examples Tom pulls from make the teaching easy to understand and transferable to your own ideas. I particularly enjoyed lesson 8 where Tom goes through a list of questions to ask yourself about your idea which can give you a good idea of whether or not you've got a great concept. A brilliant introduction to Tom's teaching for me and a good place to start at a reasonable price. Bravo!

What makes this course uniquely informative is how it looks at the logline from both a marketing perspective and a creative one. Tom provides a helpful series of questions for you to answer when looking at your own loglines, and those questions not only help show you how strong or weak your concept is, but also helps you truly understand how much work a great logline can accomplish.
